I believe in fairies, unicorns, rainbows, sunflowers and beauty, lucky for me, they all live next door in the beautiful canvases of my artist neighbor, Angelica Herrera. It is hard not to notice Angelica, even if she is not in front of one of her exquisite paintings: she is beautiful, smart, funny, humble, a mother, wife, artist and I am proud to say, a wonderful friend!
I am always in awe in front of her beautiful paintings, there is a whimsical trait that transcends the canvas and inspires whoever is lucky enough to have a chance to admire her artwork. Angelica was kind enough to accept my interview invitation, and I would like to introduce you all to the magic of her art.
Mara Circiu: Please give us a brief biography, where you are from and how did you get started as a painter? When and how did you first discover your creative talents?
Angelica Herrera: I was born in Queretaro, Qro Mexico, and I had a very happy childhood with my grandparents, uncles, and aunts. My fondest childhood memories are that when I was very young, my teacher would ask me to stay after school and paint with her. This was the thing I loved the most when I was young. Life is very unpredictable, and when I was 14 years old I left this idyllic life back in Mexico and I came to America. I was excited to come to a new country, and learn a new language and experience a whole new culture. I still did not understand what my calling was until many years later. My husband always said "You can paint anything you get your hands on", and my mother-in-law also encouraged me to continue painting, she loves my artwork. I never thought that anybody would be interested in buying my art, but they both encouraged me to pursue what I loved the most, painting.
Mara Circiu: Have any famous artists influenced you? Being born in Mexico influenced you as an artist?
Angelica Herrera: Frida Kahlo was one of the most famous Mexican artists of her time, she painted her own unique fokloric style, I just love her self-portraits and the paintings that depict moments of her life. She truly inspired me to paint and discover myself through my art.
Mara Circiu: I know you are primarily a self-taught painter, do you ever regret not getting formal training?
Angelica Herrera: I discovered the world of painting without any formal training in an art college. I can't change my past, I can only change my future and that's what I'm looking forward to.
Mara Circiu: Describe yourself in five words.
Angelica Herrera: Passionate, spiritual, positive, caring, strong.
Mara Circiu: How would you describe your style?
Angelica Herrera: I'm not sure what my art style is, I haven't developed a certain one yet ... I just paint what makes me happy, and hopefully my art reflects my passion for beauty.
Mara Circiu: How does the creative process work in your case? What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?
Angelica Herrera: When you love to do something so much, it doesn't matter what it is, you really don't need much to motivate you, it's in your heart and soul.
Mara Circiu: Where do you see yourself as a painter in ten years?
Angelica Herrera: In ten years from now, I can see myself just asking the Lord to give me health and to continue to be the best I could ever be so I can make someone feel good through my artwork.
Mara Circiu: Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring artists?
Angelica Herrera: If I would give advice to anyone, especially to a fellow artist, I would say to search deep within yourself, find your passion, and ask God to help you to be the best you can be.
